Back To Blogging

Ok, So I've been slack on updating the blog for a while. I'll try and get back into it as much as I can. I have some fun photo shoots to show off here like the Charleston Wedding Photo Booth and the time that I spent in the creek with Sheryl and MJ.

Pipe Dream Lighting Set Up and Post

I try to take photos of my pipes a lot... rarely do I like how they come out. While this is not my favorite pipe shot, its one of my better ones.

I used my brown leather chair as the back drop for this. I wanted something to highlight the grain in the pipes up front. I used a DIY beauty light to the right coming just above the pipes. This gave a nice wrap around light.

I also used a flash behind a white umbrelal with a CTO gel on it high and to the right. This gave me a little color separation like an incandescent bulb. It produced some nice reflections on the bag and jar top.

In Photoshop I took it a step further. I wanted it to have an contrasty feel to it and also an old feel. I meticulously dodged and burned places on the image I wanted to either lighten or darken relatively.

After I finished that I applied an action I have saved called High Pass Contrast. You can learn about it here: johnpaulcaponigro.com

I also applied different techniques taken from this tutorial. I highly recommend it. You do not need to own LucisArts plugin to get these effects, but it does make it a lot easier.

Ashton Surf Board Lighting Set Up

Here is a photo I made for my brother-in-law's birthday. I used his surf board early one morning when we stayed at my wife's Aunts' and Uncles' beach house.

I think I made it to the beach around 7:00AM but I could be wrong. I carried all my lighting gear, camera gear and the surf board on my bicycle.

For this photo I used a single flash on a stand with a CTO (color temperature orange) gel on the front of it at full power. I think I used the fastest sync speed I could with my camera (1/250th second). I'm pretty sure I had the aperture bumped way up to 16 or higher. That's basically all I did for this photo to capture it.

In Photoshop I did a few things like lighten the board just a bit and darken the sand some. Not much else.

Here is a shot of on of my set ups. Just picture the light stand on the left instead of the right.
